malta - the stuff dreams are made of
Malta_the_maltese_falcon_cover_full
A medieval city at the heart of the Mediterranean, alluded to by Homer himself, Malta is a fearless fortress in the face of marina winds and rippling azure waves. Renaissance style and Baroque accoutrement contribute to the prehistoric vibe and culture-fused sensibility. Home to the “Silent City,” but oh-so anything but, Malta proves its still waters truly run deep.
the romance
Malta_the_maltese_falcon_1
Sun-baked stone temples, an ancient walled city, not to mention a quilt of historical influence including Turkish, Greek, and Phoenician roots, makes Malta a rich template for discovery and exploration. Hearts and minds sync up thanks to tales of the Knights of St. John and the shipwreck of the Apostle Paul. Make a pit-stop at Hagar Qim, a sacred relic to the fertility gods and goddesses if you’re really set on sealing the deal that evening.
the scenery

Flemish tapestries, grand cathedrals, and the Palace of the Grand Masters are true jaw-droppers – that is, until you snuggle up at a cliff resort overlooking Golden Bay. Honey-colored stone farms in tiny rural hamlets meet shopping expeditions in glitterati Sliema. Watch as yachts color the resplendent harbors while gulls catch a current in the crystal-cut skies above.
the attractions

Malta is actually the crown jewel in a tiara of fantastic, surprisingly unspoiled islets. Visit unique Gozo for its world-renowned diving or Comino for a freshened-up daytrip and wine-seeped dinner alfresco. The capital of Valletta is considered to be a World Heritage Site while the remnants of Mdina are worthy of a gander for all of its crumbling-turret glory.
Other Maltese musts include:
The Hypogeum, over 5,000 years old, and the most expansive underground religious site on the planet
The Azure Window of Dwejra – the world's oldest free-standing stone edifice
The nymph-like caves of Gozo and the garnet red sands of Ramla Bay
the adventure

Snorkel within the sanctity of Blue Lagoon where a pearlesque white seabed awaits below a crystalline surface. Arrange a boat dive with an experienced skipper or a motorbike rental for a sped-up take on nearby breathtaking backcountry roads. Chart the inland limestone crags or do the scuba with a school of barracudas. No matter what wet ‘n’ wild temptation you choose, top off the day’s activities with a traditional fizzy drink of Kinnie – reminiscent of bitter oranges and a hint of salt.
the secrets

After an indulgent episode of flat-rock sunbathing, chow down on fenek, or an appetite-cinching bowl of rabbit stew. Horse drawn carriages carry starry-eyed couples down to the docks as ships from faraway lands glimmer in the evening twilight. Swim with dolphins at Sliema’s Marine Park or take in fireworks during one of the many local summer festas.
